Monstera
The Monstera is a popular houseplant with a hip and trendy image. This is mainly due to the plant’s distinct and extravagant appearance, as the Monstera actually looks a lot like a cheese of holes. But in plant form! This is the reason why the plant bears many other names, such as hole plant and Deliciosa. The plant belongs to the arum family (Araceae).
The Monstera as an office plant
Almost all species are native to areas in South America with rain forests, such as Mexico and Panama. It is an extremely easy-to-maintain plant, which instantly gives any interior a trendy boost. In addition, the Monstera has excellent air-purifying properties, which makes this plant a popular guest especially in the office.
Appearance of the Monstera
The hole plant is immediately striking because of its leaves, which are large and round in shape and completely covered with holes. The leaves are forked, in an extreme way. Also, some species have aerial roots, something that gives the plant an extra dimension. In nature, the Monstera mainly grows up against trees and rocks and can reach a height of up to 20 meters that way.
As an indoor plant, the Monstera will not grow very tall, but several feet are no exception. The hole plant is generally deep green, but there are also varieties available that range from light green to dark green, white-spotted plants and plants with smaller leaves and larger holes. Large leaves can be up to a meter in diameter. A fun detail: in China, the Monstera symbolizes longevity.
Monstera maintenance
Make sure the potting soil is always slightly moist, especially in spring and summer. As soon as the soil starts to feel dry, you can add a little water. The Monstera is very sensitive to too much water, so water a little too little rather than too much. Otherwise the roots will rot and the leaves will turn yellowish. In winter, the potting soil may feel dry for a week. The Monstera is also happy with a good watering, especially in the warmer months you can do this once a week.
It is best to place the plant at least 2 meters away from a window, because the Monstera does not handle direct and bright sunlight very well. So indirect sunlight is best. The ideal temperature inside is at least 20℃ during the day and 16℃ at night. You can repot the plant in spring, always use a pot that is at least 20% larger than the previous one. You can also provide the plant with some extra liquid nutrition in the spring.
The Monstera as an office plant
The hole plant is an exceptionally chic and beautiful plant that can be an eye-catcher in reception areas. The plant purifies the air of various nasty toxins and matches any interior. The Monstera is therefore especially popular in the office. Would you like to know if this plant is something for you? Please feel free to contact us.
