Philodendron
Are you looking for a robust yet stylish plant that will make an immediate impression in your home or office? Then the Philodendron imperial is an excellent choice. With its large, shiny leaves, this tropical plant makes a powerful, decorative statement. Moreover, the philodendron is extremely low-maintenance and perfect for spaces with varying light and air conditions.
What is a philodendron imperial?
Philodendron imperial belongs to the genus Philodendron, a family of tropical plants native to the rain forests of Central and South America. What distinguishes the “Imperial” variety is its compact but vigorous appearance, with broad leaves that range from deep green to dark red (for example, in the Imperial Red).
This plant does not grow in a drooping form like some of its peers, but forms a sturdy, upright forest of leaves. Those leaves have a leathery texture and an almost glossy surface, making them look remarkably luxurious. It is a plant that instantly adds character to a space without being obtrusive. They grow mostly in width, less so in height.
The best care for a Philodendron imperial
The Philodendron imperial is known as an easy houseplant that has few requirements, as long as it is in a suitable location. Nevertheless, there are some basic principles that it is best to follow to give the philodendron a long life.
Light requirement
This plant does well in an environment with bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can damage the leaves, but too little light slows growth and reduces leaf production. A spot a few feet from a window is usually ideal. In office environments without daylight, the plant also functions under artificial light.
Watering
The Philodendron likes slightly moist soil, but absolutely does not tolerate its roots remaining in water. Allow the top layer of soil to dry out before re-watering. Too much water quickly leads to yellowing of the leaves or root rot. In winter, when the plant is not growing as actively, you only need to water sporadically.
Humidity and temperature
Although the philodendron imperial is native to humid rain forests, the plant adapts well to our indoor climate. Average humidity in the home or office is usually sufficient, although the plant appreciates a sporadic misting on dry days. Temperatures between 18 and 25°C are ideal. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
Extra care and growth
The Philodendron Imperial has a fairly leisurely growth rate and does not get too big quickly and retains its shape. It also needs little to no pruning. During the growing season – spring and summer – you can apply a light dose of houseplant food.
Always use a pot with drainage holes and well-drained potting soil so that excess water can easily drain away. And another aesthetic tip: Choose a plant pot on a decorative pedestal or in a raised ornamental pot. That way the leaves will stand out better.
Air purifying ability
Like many tropical plants, the Philodendron helps purify indoor air. It absorbs pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene and other VOCs and converts them into oxygen. This contributes to a fresher and healthier work environment, with less chance of headaches, dry eyes or fatigue.
Stress relieving and atmosphere promoting
Research shows that plants have a positive effect on our well-being. The presence of greenery in the workspace lowers stress levels, improves mood and creates a more pleasant atmosphere. So employees are sure to appreciate those plants!
Improve acoustics
The broad, sturdy leaves of this plant can contribute to sound attenuation in a room. Sound waves are thus partially absorbed, creating more pleasant acoustics.
Visual impact without crowding
The philodendron imperial is striking without appearing cluttered or busy. The plant therefore fits well in minimalist interiors, but also contrasts nicely with colorful or warm styles. A philodendron fills the space without dominating and gives a professional-looking look to waiting rooms, meeting rooms or receptions.
