Schefflera
Want to brighten up your office or workplace with a stylish and easy-to-care-for plant? Then the Schefflera, also known as the dwarf umbrella tree, is an excellent choice. This plant, with its characteristic umbrella-shaped leaves, brightens up the space and is also an excellent air purifier. The Schefflera is therefore an excellent green colleague in any workplace.
Schefflera: the ideal house and office plant
The Schefflera, also known as the dwarf umbrella tree or Schefflera arboricola, is a popular choice for both homes and offices. The beautiful, glossy leaves fit perfectly into any indoor space, and the plant is also extremely low-maintenance. The Schefflera originated in Taiwan and southern China, but today the plant shows off in homes and offices worldwide. It is therefore a very flexible plant that easily adapts to new conditions.
The plant has compound leaves reminiscent of an umbrella, hence the name “umbrella tree.” The leaves are green, but varieties are also available with variegated patterns, such as yellow-green or cream-colored varieties. The plant can grow large, but grows in a compact form that allows it to be integrated into both small and large spaces, whether in a cozy living room, a bright office space or a reception hall.
This is how to care for a Schefflera
The Schefflera is not only beautiful to look at, but also very easy to care for. It is perhaps one of the biggest advantages of the umbrella tree. We are happy to give you our care tips.
1. Light and location
The Schefflera arboricola thrives best in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, especially the variegated varieties. The plant can also survive in environments with less light, but the umbrella tree will grow slower and the colored varieties may lose their color. A spot near a window that offers filtered light is ideal.
2. Water
The Schefflera needs regular but not excessive watering. It is important to allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Too much water can cause root rot, while too little water can cause the leaves to droop or even fall off. In winter, when the plant is less active, you may water less.
3. Temperature and humidity
This plant feels best at home in room temperatures between 15 and 24 degrees, although it can also withstand lower temperatures. The Schefflera likes medium humidity, but it can also survive in drier conditions, making it suitable for air-conditioned or heated offices.
4. Nutrition and care
Feed the Schefflera with fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). In the fall and winter, this is not necessary. The Schefflera arboricola tends to grow upward, but by pruning you can give the plant a compact and full shape. Pruning also promotes branching, which gives the plant a fuller appearance.
Repot the Schefflera every two to three years in spring, or when the roots begin to crowd the pot. Choose a pot with good drainage to avoid wet roots.
The benefits of the Schefflera in the workplace
Having a Schefflera in the workplace offers several benefits beyond aesthetics. This plant contributes to a healthier and more productive work environment in several ways.
Air-purifying properties
Like many other houseplants, the Schefflera arboricola is known for its ability to purify the air. In fact, the plant not only produces oxygen but even filters pollutants from the air, significantly improving air quality in the office. Better air quality can lead to a healthier work environment, reduced absenteeism and overall improved employee well-being.
Increased productivity and creativity
Research has shown that the presence of plants in the workplace, such as Schefflera, can help reduce stress and increase concentration and productivity. Employees are also more creative when they look out on greenery, studies have proven. So the green and vibrant look of the plant can even improve your employees’ performance.
Homey atmosphere
Of course, the Schefflera also simply brightens up the workspace. The plant can be used to fill bare corners, create a visual contrast to the sleek office interior, or create a welcoming atmosphere in common areas such as reception or meeting rooms. And both employees and visitors notice this. After all, working among greenery is more pleasant and the space looks nicer.
Also not unimportant: plants improve acoustics. A lot of large office spaces suffer from poor acoustics because a lot of hard materials are used. Plants can definitely help then!
